Are You New to Graphic Design?

An aspiring graphic design student searching for career advice or graphic design jobs? Or maybe you’re a professional graphic artist trying to further your prospects?
Well there’s no need to fret because help has arrived! Although they may differ from company to company or school to school, most companies and graphic design schools have similar descriptions.

Three Most Common Titles in Graphic Design

Here is a short list of specifications and roles of some of the many various job descriptions that you may come across in, what is loosely described as, the design industry.

1. Web Designers

So where does a web designer fit in with all of this you say? Currently, web designers tend to have similar titles and roles to their colleagues in the print design industry.

An expectation of many web designers is an ability to code. Other web designers are only responsible for creating the concepts in Photoshop, then handing the graphics over to web developers to code by hand. This leads to a number of job vacancies as companies are always searching for a way to advertise themselves.

A graphic designer who is working on interactive design or web site design jobs should have a good understanding of interactive design principles, usability and online branding issues.

2. Art Director

The art directors’ role is basically to come up with ideas. Graphic jobs for an art director generally mean that he or she is the most senior “hands-on” person in a design project or creative campaign.

An AD should understand branding and also oversee the correct briefing and supervision of the rest of the design team. Often this will be in tandem with a studio manager.

3. Creative Directors

Creative directors often go through the same jobs in design as art directors. Adversely, more and more are coming in from a marketing background–and certainly this is beneficial in a corporate design environment. More often than not, this isn’t considered as a “hands-on” design position. This is due to the fact that few creative directors will sit down in front of a computer and grind out concepts in Illustrator on a daily basis.

Creative directors usually become certified in handling the higher level issues of branding and marketing and have a lot more direct contact with the client.

These are just a few of the many areas of design that area available to you. Although only a partial list of designer jobs, it should still give you a glimpse of what to expect when it comes to graphic design jobs.
