Character animation and cartoon animation have been the interest of many people for decades. This may be due to the fact that animations are replications of real-life movements and are artistically pieced together making providing plenty of viewer pleasure.
Animations can range from 2d to 3d or some mixture of both. Through the use of animation software, amazing things can be made. Check out this montage of animations from the Siggraph 2010 Computer Animation Festival.

Computer graphics, or more commonly known as CG, are as its name implies, graphics created by computers. These graphics include 3D, 3D animations, 2D and web graphic design. CG is used in most of today’s popular recreational outlets such as video games, film, and animation.
There are two categories that are used in graphics: pixel art and vector graphics. A pixel is a single point in a raster (or unsmooth) image. Web graphics tend to use pixels less because they can only be a certain size before they become pixellated. Graphing calculator games, older computer and video games, and most cell phones utilize pixel art due to the limited processing power of each device. Vector graphics (more commonly used computer graphics) use a mathematical equation to determine where lines and curves should be to give the best possible quality.
In the past 2D animations were hand drawn and each frame was drawn individually. Today, they are still hand drawn or drawn on a computer, but the process of animation is simpler because it can be done as a computer animation. A flash graphic designer, for instance, would use 2D graphics in an ecommerce website (a website that displays a catalogue of merchandise). Some car companies have interactive catalogues that use 2D graphics to display car color combinations and cabin views.
A 3D design job consist of modeling 3D characters and objects and then animating those same models. You can easily spot 3D CG in movies such as Avatar and Transformers. Many of today’s film companies and all video game companies use some form of 3D in their work helping to make it as life-like as possible. With 3D animation it stems from 2D animation in that one image is shown and then another with a slight change in it, repeat this and you have a computer graphics animation.
