Are You Interested in Gaining an Art Degree ?

Graphic designers—by hand or with the aid of a computer—plan, analyze, and organize the layout of both print and computer media. Designers find the most effective way to get messages across in colors, sound, artwork, photography, animation, type, and other visual elements for the design. Many graphic designers specialize in a particular area of presentation, such as web design, layout, or typography.

In any design college or design academy, they will be sure to let you know it’s no cake walk being a designer. Being a graphic designer requires creativity, problem-solving skills, and a familiarity with computer graphics and design software. Individuals in the design field must also be able to communicate their ideas verbally, visually, and in writing.

So What’s Needed to Be a Graphic Designer?

Due to the constant changes tastes in style and fashion, designers need to be open to new ideas and influences, well-read, and quick to react to changing trends. In an industry where 3 out of every 10 designers are self-employed, strong problem-solving skills coupled with the ability to work independently and under pressure are important traits.

Understanding clients’ needs and how to satisfy them requires a good business sense and sales ability (not to mention how it helps for freelancing or running ones own business).

Graphic designers must be able to combine practical knowledge with artistic ability in order to turn abstract ideas into practical designs. People pursuing this field must have a strong sense of color and detail, a sense of balance and proportion, and the ability to imagine something before creating it. Contrary to popular belief, sketching ability remains an important advantage in most types of design, despite the advancement of computer-aided design.

As a designer, you will want to have a collection of all your work from concepts to actual projects. Such a collection is called a portfolio, and it is the most important asset to any designer. As important as it is, there should be no anxiety when it comes to portfolios. After finishing your courses in any graphic design college, you’ll have plenty of material for creating a portfolio.

Did You Know That You Can Take Courses Online?

That’s right! Without leaving the comfort of your own home, you can pursue your design degree online. In fact, in most cases it’s cheaper to take courses online than to attend an actual institute. Think about it, cheaper tuition, no room and board fees, the same lessons, the same lessons taken AT YOUR LEISURE, and never having to leave your house. That sounds like a winning situation to me.

Graphic arts, a term traditionally applied  to the art of drawing and printmaking. Graphic art, as a trade, traces back to the first instances of a stamped image or word during the Tang dynasty. In modern usage it refers to the applied skills of a typesetter, graphic designer, or pressman. Today, receiving art instruction and a degree in graphic design is a requirement to become a graphic artist. Usually, graphic art is the produce of a design on materials such as paper, cloth, wood, metals, and plastics etc. The production is completed with the help of mediums like rubber, Plexiglas, or printing machines, in order to transfer the images and/or make an impression/print. More recently, graphic art refers to the advent of 2D, computer-generated images. These images quite frequently contain text as a caption along with other drawings. In fact the “computer age” has made things like offset lithography, and serigraphy (screen printing) easier due to the ability to correcting mistakes on the fly.

Graphic art is commonly used in marketing (advertisement)–just take a look at all the ads on TV, billboards, magazines, and even newspapers. It is mainly used to excite or intrigue people and to help produce sales on a product or service. Additionally, there are many career titles associated with graphic arts including: children’s book publishers and/or illustrator, director (radio, motion picture, state, and television ), graphic designer, fashion designer, visual artist, animator, art director, commercial and industrial designer, set designer, interior designer, camera operator (television, video or movie operator), desktop publisher, cartoonist, comic book artist, picture book illustrator, composing room supervisor, painter, illustrators, and online producer. Besides having an outlet for your creativity, graphic art is also a good paying niche with plenty of career choices.

With all that being said, I think the following quote sums up the idea of graphic arts quite nicely:  ”Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing, but nobody else does.” -Steuart H. Britt
