Whether you’re the next Steven Spielberg or a desperate family member putting together a video for “family day”, you’ll need video editing software.

There are many good video editing programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Corel DVD Movie Factory, and Sony Vegas Movie Studio. Each one with its own benefits as well as its own target market. For example, free video software editing programs like Kino, AviSynth, Ingex, and CineFX are geared towards the “desperate family member”. On the other hand, programs like Blender (VSE), Avid Xpress Pro, Sony Vegas Pro, and Adobe Premier Pro are more specific to professionals and high-end movie production.

Video editing software is used for uploading and converting the captured footage from a video recording device such as a camcorder or PC camera. Once the footage is on your computer, you can then begin to edit the video by cutting, transitioning, adding titles, adjusting color and brightness, using special effects, adding audio and a plethora of other things. Even video editors have to be like a graphic designer at times because they must know how to subtly affect people with color and placement of certain elements.

Most video producers today use video editing software called NLEs or non-linear editors especially for hd video editing. They are called NLEs because it allows you to go back and forth to any point on a movie timeline and adjust the footage as you see fit. This also means that more time will be spent recording since there is no need to record in order. While most video producers today use this method, newstations typically use linear editing because they only need to edit footage as they get it.

As wonderful as it may be to be able to make a short video or full length movie, it does come at a cost. Usually video software downloads and programs are very expensive and may require you to upgrade your computer (in terms of processing and memory, so it can handle/store all your videos, audio, and effects). These programs produce large files and the raw footage needed will also eat up your memory. If you’re interested in professional video editing software, then a 1 Terabyte external hard drive or two is recommended.

All in all your choice of video editing program depends on your needs. If you simply want to put videos together and add audio and change some features of the video like color and brightness, then you’re better off with the cheap or free video editing software available. If you want to produce professional videos or even movies then you’ll have to shell out a few thousands bucks but it’ll be worth it in the long run.
